Monday, August 4, 2003 --- Hacking contest promotes security

LAS VEGAS--The U.S. government continues to talk tough on computer crime, but here in the desert, hackers--including some from federal agencies--are learning about defending networks by breaking into computers. The exercise is part of a Capture the Flag-like game that's known as Root Fu. The annual contest pits eight teams at the DefCon conference against each other in a test of network defense and hacking skills. Each team has to defend its own server and applications while trying to break into the servers of the seven other teams. "This sort of adversarial testing shows what is possible--and not--with security," said Crispin Cowan, chief scientist at Linux security seller Immunix and the leader of the Immunix team. "We value this competition, because we think it is a better evaluation of security than common criteria." Such comments conflict with tough talk from top-level U.S. officials who still look at hackers as a threat. Laws such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act have focused on punishing hackers. But knowledgeable security experts see practicing such skills through Root Fu-like challenges as a necessary way to improve security.

"The reality is that you may have hostility at a high level, but the people who know their stuff decided to come," said Adam Shostack, chief technology officer for security start-up Informed Security.

Each team had to run five Web services on a variant of Unix known as BSD. The services consisted of the music streaming application IceCast, a Web news portal based on Slashcode, two ads, and a multiuser text-based role-playing game known as FurryMuck. Each team accumulated points for having the applications available. The longer a service was up, the more points its supervising team won. However, each team lost points if a service it was running became compromised. Ghettohackers, the group of hackers who created and officiated the game, focused on making the competition a good measure of offensive and defensive security skills. Late Saturday, the Immunix team retained a large lead, but another team named Anomaly caught up to win the competition on Sunday.

Alan Harper, a security engineer with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), thought that competitions like Root Fu could help others understand that all hacking isn't bad. "There is an understanding, more and more, of ethical hacking," he said. "The technique is the same, but the intent is different. It's not something that we have to hide from our peers at work." Root Fu--a hackerish name that derived from the superuser's name on Unix systems, root, and the final syllable of kung fu--may have also settled a long-debated point, Immunix's Cowan said: whether hackers make the best defenders. "The offensive attackers have been doing the best code auditing," he said. "They attack, find the holes and then tell the defenders on the team." The experience underscores that knowing how to attack systems is a critical skill in learning how to defend them. Others have maintained that you can't trust hackers, but Cowan stressed that it's all about the ethics of the hacker.

"Hacking tools should not be illegal, but if I use them to break into your computer, then I'm a criminal," he said.

Sunday, August 3, 2003 --- Attack bot exploits Windows flaw

LAS VEGAS--Online vandals are using a program to compromise Windows servers and remotely control them through Internet relay chat (IRC) networks, system administrators said Saturday. Several programs, including one that exploits a recent vulnerability in computers running Windows, have been cobbled together to create a remote attack tool. The tool takes commands from an attacker through the IRC networks and can scan for and compromise computers vulnerable to the recently discovered flaw in Windows. Files left behind on a compromised server by the worm were posted to a security mailing list. Computer security company Symantec analyzed the files and determined that what was first thought to be a worm was actually an attack program. "Based on our analysis, the threat does not appear to be a worm," said Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager for Symantec's security response team. "It doesn't go and try to spread." Friedrichs was in Las Vegas attending the Black Hat Briefings and DefCon hacking conferences. The ability to spread automatically is the hallmark of a computer worm. The collection of programs that Symantec analyzed is a tool that compromises computers and is referred to as an autorooter. It also acts like an IRC bot, listening to specific channels on the chat network and taking commands from attackers via IRC.

The initial post describing what security researchers thought might be a worm appeared at 10 a.m. PDT Saturday on the Full-Disclosure security list. The tool consists of six files that work together to find vulnerable systems and attack them. Ever since the Windows flaw was announced, security researchers widely expected a worm to be written to exploit it. The IRC bot is one step removed from a worm and less disruptive.

This bot compromises computers using a flaw that Microsoft warned the public about on July 16.

The flaw is in the distributed component object model (DCOM) interface, a part of the OS that allows other computers to request the system to perform an action or service. The object, known as the remote procedure call (RPC) process, facilitates activities such as sharing files and allowing others to use the computer's printer. By sending too much data to the DCOM interface, an attacker can cause the system to grant full access to the computer. A week ago, hackers from the Chinese X-Focus security group publicly posted a program to several security lists designed to allow an intruder to use the vulnerability to break into Windows computers. The Windows flaw has been characterized by some security experts as the most widespread ever found in Windows. In the past week, security researchers and hackers have been refining the exploit code. That program is one of the six that make up the tool. The files include rpc.exe, rpctest.exe, tftpd.exe, worm.exe, lolx.exe and dcomx.exe. Although one of the programs sports the name "worm.exe," the resulting set of files is not a worm, because it doesn't spread automatically, Friedrichs said.

Symantec was still analyzing the files late Saturday, but judging from the names of the files the tool can search for vulnerable computers via RPC and when it finds a target, exploit the system with dcomx.exe. The Trivial FTP server, tftpd, allows files to be transferred to the new host, and lolx is likely to be a component that allows attackers to communicate with the system via IRC.

Sunday, August 3, 2003 --- The Sequestered House?
Will Dana and or Jun become the first person to live in the sequestered house fot this season of BB4? Representatives from Shapiro's Productions are saying that said extra house is located somewhere on the CBS lot, but will not say exactly where. Some footage shot at the sequestered house may be used on the CBS BB4 TV show broadcasts. Residents in the sequestered house will be able to see "some" action at the main house, but not the "diary room" sessions where houseguests may talk about or reveal their strategy. Will Dana or Jun or maybe a different houseguest(in case Robert uses the POV he won) have to live in the sequestered house all by themselves until the next houseguest is evicted? Who knows... Maybe Arnold will bring back Amy from BB3 to room in there and keep the evicted houseguests company!!!

Here comes the first wave of raunchy gossip

Scott went a little nuts around midnight pacific standard time and apparantly trashed the house. All of the other houseguests were a little terrified of him after the rampage, which made justins knife loving against krista look like a farmer carving out a jack o lantern. Big Brother has probably, removed Scott from the house...for the other houseguest's safety. Live feed reports are coming into reality411.com that say scott has not been seen on any live feed since MIDNITE PST.

Reality411.com received this letter from Brandon
First and foremost I want to thank everyone for the barrage of emails and posts full of encouraging advice and perspective. It’s been a disappointing few days, and your words were uplifting. I do believe things happen for a reason. I watch very little TV let alone reality shows. Obviously I have done some research on this & lasts seasons house guests since my return home. It was relieving to see the online ridicule each and every houseguest was subjected to, regardless of how they were portrayed on the show. It appears God has a different plan for me. One that does not involve the inherit ramifications of appearing on one of the largest reality shows to date. I realize the real curiosity lies within the reasons I am no longer appearing on BB4. I portrayed myself as a single man during the interview process and the producers were under that impression. I dealing with a rough time in my relationship and indeed thought we were about to break up. The relationship panned out and I went into the house a committed man. During the sequestering process there’s nothing to do but think and I realized there were some major details I had not specifically addressed to my girlfriend before leaving. A quarter of the way through the isolation process the words that went unsaid between me and my girl weighed heavy, and I took a risk. I called the maid service (a huge mistake), and asked if they had the “capability of accessing outside lines”. They said no, only the front desk can provide this. I hung up the phone and that was the end of it. The maid was aware of which room I called from and informed producers. I also made the mistake of telling my handler (personal assistant) all the idea’s I had schemed up. Ideas about how I could easily beat the system and get to a computer/telephone, none of which I actually executed. I was venting thoughts, but when my words were relayed they were taken very seriously. The snowball starts there. My attempted phone call was an attempt to get on the same page and give her some reassurance. Once my wrist was slapped for my failed attempt, I was permitted to send her a letter which of course was proofed to make sure I was not disclosing information as to my whereabouts. In that letter I spoke of my loyalty and devotion to her and how committed I was going to be to her on the show. I wanted her to know I was going to be strong and trustworthy. This kind of thought process is not going to yield the kind of drama that leads to ratings. I would assume the producers discussed this in my execution meeting. This decision was bitter sweet. I think Big Brother made a wise choice based on evidence they accumulated. They have a house full of single people - to the best of my knowledge none of which have children or a girl/boyfriend. It would not be in their best interest to position someone such as myself into this environment unless he was going to put out. Basically, I broke the rules and I got caught. I’m rebellious by nature and that does not sit well with people who spend their entire summer running such a complex show. I’m still going to watch tonight with both curiosity and frustration.
Changing gears:

Dave's Ex Revealed!
Dave's friend let's us in on the secret: "My local radio station interviewed the producer guy Arnold whatever this morning, and he confirmed the 19yr. old girl from Boca was Dave's ex. So it's definitely this girl Michelle Marade(sp?) and she is this dim-witted very bubbly chick from boca raton, Fl. She is probably the equivalent to a Florida valley girl so to speak. I would expect Dave to try to re-kindle with her, I can almost bet on it. Read the rest of the article here.

Alison's No Angel!
A friend speaks about Alison's behaviour at home. I paraphrase: Looks like the pageant queen is not exactly a princess afterall. The friend knows her well and Alison appears to have a history of violence and very erratic behavior. She has been in trouble with the law a number of times but has always gotten out of it because of her top notch attorney father. Not only has alison been arrested numerous times, rumour has it that she also has starred in many of her own amateur pornos with other ex's. I guess this means that she will not be shy on camera in the BB house! Her last ex was Justin Giovinco, who is rumored to be on the show. He is a good guy that got mixed up with a bad girl. Alison's friend says he's a shoe-in for the win, while Alison should be one of the first three evicted. To see the ex-s Picture go to BB4BBQ

Kent Blackwelder from Big Brother 2 had a chat with us this morning in out chatroom #bigbrothercbs here at Reality411.com. If you would like to read the transcript of the chat please go here!

"'Big Brother' Player Denied Entry to House"
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A contestant on CBS' "Big Brother 4" has been kicked out of the house before he even entered. Brandon Showalter, one of the nine people scheduled to enter the "Big Brother 4" house in Tuesday's (July 8) premiere, has been removed from the game. His replacement will be announced during the premiere. CBS isn't saying much about the decision. A press release from the network says the show's producers have decided to increase the "X Factor," replacing Showalter with an ex-boyfriend or -girlfriend of one of the other players. That would bring the number of former couples on the show from four to five. A representative for the show couldn't be reached Monday morning. Several "Big Brother" fan sites have noted that Showalter, a 28-year-old computer engineer from Newport Beach, Calif., posted several messages about his removal on a personal web site over the weekend. They acknowledged his removal from the show, and one indicated that he'd tried to contact a girlfriend while he and the other players were sequestered in the days leading up to when they entered the house, a violation of the show's no-outside-contact rules. The site has since been taken down."
"CAST CHANGE ON "BIG BROTHER 4"
"The producers of BIG BROTHER 4 have made a casting change to the previously announced group of HouseGuests, increasing the "X Factor" from four couples to five couples. Brandon Showalter has been replaced with a fifth ex who will be revealed along with the remaining four HouseGuests in the premiere episode on Tuesday, July 8 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network."

Brandon Speaks
Today we spoke on the phone with Brandon - this is what we learned. We asked if he had spoken to Arnold Shapiro, he said yes, he had talked with him earlier today. Arnold is going to get his lawyers in touch with Brandon about what he can and cannot say to the press/BB fan sites. Brandon also said that visiting BB websites has been depressing. He says in the next few days he will be writing a document that will explain what went on and what is happening so that we will all know. He will distribute it to a couple sites that haven't "dissed him" on Wednesday. The reason he's waiting is that he's hoping the attention is taken off him and put on the show instead.
